Peter Pan (1953) and Peter Pan & Wendy Move Review and Comparison on Disney+
Blog and Video Description: In this episode of Mattacrtic, I will be reviewing Peter Pan and Wendy that is currently on Disney+. This movie will deal with a retelling of the original 1953 classic cartoon of Peter Pan. There will be similarities to that cartoon, but there are differences told in this movie as well. The movie still has the feel, but it tells the story differently than the original movie that came out in 1953. This movie is live action which will make it different to the 1953 cartoon. I will make comparisons to that movie as well as say which version is better.

As I mentioned before in this review, Peter Pan and Wendy will have some similarities to the original cartoon movie that came out in 1953. The original cartoon that came out in 1953 was Rated G, but this movie that came out this year in 2023 was rated PG. The movie starts off with the 2 brothers to Wendy Maura Angela Darling whose names are John and Michael playing their game with them pretending to be Hook and Peter Pan. Like in the original John was playing Captain Hook and Michael was playing Peter Pan. Wendy was getting ready to go to boarding school which is different from the original. In the original, the father wants Wendy to get out of the nursery. As he said, it was time for her to get out of the nursery. Wendy joins in the game and at the end of the sword fight, she knocks John’s sword by accident to break the mirror. The father is upset and tells Wendy, “Is this type of fun you should be having.” He takes their swords and John’s hat. The father has Nanna did like in the original movie did and put her outside right where her doghouse would be.
Wendy tells her mother that she does want to grow up after her mother told her that her brothers look up to her. She does not want to go to boarding school. She rather have things stay as they are. Her mother tells her, “Think of things you will miss out on if you are not here to do them. Think about what the world misses out, if you are not here to do them”. Her mother sings her and her brothers a lullaby to help get them to go to sleep. This was different than the original as her mother does not sing a lullaby to help Wendy to get to go to sleep. Wendy knew the story of Peter Pan in the original and told John and Michael. Her mother knows the story of Peter Pan in this one and tells them it.
Peter Pan will come to them like in the original, but in this version, Tinkerbell was putting pixie dust on Wendy to help her to fly while Wendy was asleep. John catches Tinkerbell and Michael tells Wendy that a little bug was helping you to fly. Wendy lets Michael know that it is not a bug. Peter Pan has the sword come on John’s shoulder and lets them know that she is a fairy, not a bug. Peter tells them that, “Fairies do not like being called bugs”. Like in the original, Peter Pan is looking for his shadow, but Wendy knew where it was. She does not know where it is in this one. It is in a drawer and Peter Pan is chasing it trying to get it back. He gets it as it is on a stair. Wendy helps Peter to sew the shadow back on like in the original. Tinkerbell is unsure of this, but Peter lets her know that it will be okay as he knows that Wendy would never try to hurt him. Wendy accidentally stabs Peter in his foot to help get his shadow back to him unlike in the original. This would make sense as if a person were sewing something like that it would do that. The cartoon did not do this, which defies logic.
Wendy gives Peter a kiss which she gives him a thumbing needle. This covers your thumb so you will not accidentally stab it while sewing. A lot of the versions of Peter Pan do this, where they say a kiss is this like in Hook which starred the late Robin Williams as an adult Peter Pan. Anyone knows a kiss is where a person has their lips go on someone else's body. It does not have to be on another person’s lips, it can be on top of the head for example.
Peter Pan will take Wendy, John, and Michael to Neverland. He will have Tinkerbell give them some pixie dust. The trick to flying is you must have happy thoughts and pixie dust to do it. This is true in Hook as well as Tinker Bell who was played by Julia Roberts told Peter Pan not to lose his happy thought when he realized the greatest day in his life was becoming a daddy. He realized that being a father was good and this helped him not to be focused on work like Ebenezer Scrooge was in Christmas Carol.
They get to Neverland and like the original one in 1953, Hook blasts them out of the sky with Cannon balls. The difference here is that Hook blasts them to the ground and Wendy lands in the water and washes up to shore. She has Peter Pan’s hat, and she is looking for Peter, Tinkerbell, John, and Michael. She fears the worst, which is understandable. Any one of us would do that. She meets the lost boys with Tiger Lilly. In the original, Tiger Lilly was taken by Captain Hook and taken to Skull Rock. Back then in 1953, movies made females into damsels in distress and needed males to rescue them. It was sexist to say the least, but understandable. Majority of Audiences today want strong female characters and that is what is shown in this depiction of Peter Pan that came out in 2023. This would be the 70th anniversary of the 1953 film.
They would go to Skull Rock and must attempt to rescue John and Michael who had been taken there in hopes of luring Peter Pan to them. Captain Hook has John and Michael chained up to the rock in the cave. Peter Pan is dressed in pirate clothing. He suddenly had the pirates sing only (no one but) children in neverland after the pirates were singing no children in neverland. Captain Hook has them stop singing when he realizes what they were singing. The pirates remove Peter Pan’s fake beard, and they start fighting. Tiger Lilly and Wendy go to rescue John and Michael. They get them free with the help of Tinkerbell. They later escape with Peter after the crocodile was attacking Hook and his men.
Wendy later slaps Peter as she is frustrated with him, which is different than the original. Back in 1953, a female would never have dared to slap a male like that. This is where it is different, Wendy tells Peter Pan, you have a magical fairy that helps you to fly. Peter can claim all he wants that he needs no help, but that is not true. Every person needs help now and then. That is true of every human being, no matter where that person is in his or her life.
What is different is that this movie goes into explaining the complex nature of Peter Pan and Captain Hook. Captain Hook was not always Captain Hook. In the 1953 version, it just has the audience believe that Captain Hook and Peter Pan were always enemies and there was not a reason to why that was. This version has the audience understand that Peter Pan and Captain Hook used to be friends before they became enemies. This is common, think of other stories such as Star Wars where Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader used to be friends before they became enemies. That is true in Spider-Man where Peter Parker and Harry Osborne where best friends before they became enemies. It is a more common storyline that is realistic. Each person has had someone that used to be his or her best friend before there was a falling out.
In the 1953 version, Hook had Smee take Tinkerbell as Tinkerbell was jealous of Wendy. Hook tricks Tinkerbell into believing he would help get rid of Wendy. This was not uncommon back then, to have a female character being the jealous lovesick female looking to stab someone in the back. In the 2023 version, they decide not to go that route.
In the 1953 version, Hook tries to blow Peter Pan up and Tinkerbell rescues him. In the 2023 version, Captain Hook has his men find Peter Pan’s hideout with Wendy singing and that led him back there. He goes up and he knows Peter is hiding. Hook swings his sword, and it cuts Peter across the chest. It would appear Peter is dead, but he is not.
Peter Pan later needs help from Tiger Lilly which was different than the original. She helps him and this makes this better. The other version basically makes Peter Pan unbeatable and that is not realistic.
As not to be revealed, nothing more will be revealed here. It does bring the viewer to the climax of the movie and set up another movie if the studio chooses.
I will give you my rating for both. The 1953 version of Peter Pan, I give that movie a 7 out of 10. That movie was making Peter Pan into a hero that was unbelievable and unbeatable is incredible and incomprehensible. It has good parts, but it makes Native Americans seem like they do not know how to talk and Hook and Smee are not imposing enough in the 1953 version. The 2023, I give that version, a 10 out of 10. This version helps to understand the complex nature of Peter Pan and Captain Hook. It helps the audience in how they met in the first place in that Hook’s real name is James and is Peter Pan’s first lost boy and was his best friend. Peter, James, and John have something in common biblically. There was part of the 12 disciples, and they were part of the Jesus’ closest three. There were 3 that were close to Jesus, and they were it. The 2023 version helps the viewer to understand how Hook met Smee, and the other version does not explain that story unlike in the 2023 version. The pirates look more realistic in the 2023 version and the songs they sing are songs that I heard personally sung at a renaissance festival. I saw an act called Pirate Shanty man and Bonnie Lass and that act had songs sung like that as they did in the 2023 version of Peter Pan. This is what makes the 2023 version better than the 1953 in so many ways. Females are tougher in this movie and do not need a male to rescue them. It shows that it is okay to get help, and that is a good lesson for each person to learn no matter where he or she is his or her life.
