As was mentioned in this review, Samantha Newsome found out that one of her family members was still alive, that is of her immediate family. She still has family with her Uncle Gill, but he dies at the beginning of this story from cancer. She has a cousin named Rhiannon, but she and Samantha have an interesting relationship to say the least. Her aunt is named Michelle, but she goes by Mitch. Mitch is Samantha’s father’s sister. Mitch can be a little harsh around Samantha to say the least.

After her Uncle Gill dies, he leaves Samantha the house, and Samantha suddenly gets left a house that she does not want to keep. She will consider selling it once she gets the stuff that her uncle left cleared out.

Samantha is having images of her past come back to haunt her. She is having a tough time dealing with the pain. She bumps into Taylor literally when she taps his bumper of the truck for Ealy Farms. Ironically, her dad worked for Ealy Farms when he was around. Taylor lets her know that he must contact the company if this happens. This is when she bumps into Rhiannon, her cousin who happens to work at Ealy Farms as well. This will cause them to talk again. The relationship is rocky, but it does mean they do not love each other still as this book will point out to the reader.

Before her uncle died, Samantha learns that her uncle Gill had regrets. He says, "I am so sorry Marnie.” It is like he is having survivor’s guilt that of Samantha’s mother of Marnie getting murdered. Samantha left Carney after college and lives in Queens and works as a nurse at a hospital in New York City. She enjoys her job, but at times it can be tough. Nancy told Samantha before she had to go back to Carney, New York to deal with her uncle Gill’s affairs; Nancy asks Samantha if they did everything that they could do to help a patient that was 93 years old that was on her death bed. This request was made by the 93-year-old woman’s son. As Samantha said, “The woman was 93 years old and was not in the best of health. What more could we have done?” This is understandable as this was after Samantha just dealt with her Uncle Gill dying.

Samantha goes to the detective of Carney police department that handled her family’s murder case at the time the murders happen. She goes to Pennsylvania where he resides after he retired from the Carney Police Department. His name is Karl Holcombe. He lets her know that he believes that there is one man that could have killed your family and his is name is Ed Robinette. If it seems convenient it is because it is. Ed Robinette is not the type as the reader will find to do something like this. He sells drugs, but he is not the type of person do something this horrible.

This will lead Samantha to run into Stephen Rhodes because she wants to know what he has to do with this. Stephen Rhodes was the police officer that was the bad apple. He tended to be the police officer that no one wanted to run into. He was officer Rhodes at the time of Samantha’s family being killed. He is now detective Rhodes. She believes it was cops that got her family killed. It is no secret that Carney Police Department totally messed this case up. As the story will reveal, another individual who was from Carney felt the same as Samantha does about the Carney Police Department.

The reason Samantha wanted to talk to Stephen Rhodes at first was to find her old friend Danica Burkhardt that went missing. She wanted to find out where she was. She pretended that she was someone else so Rhodes would not treat her differently. Newsome is not a name in Carney that was known to have a lot of respect for.

Samantha goes to Cloud 69 where she meets Breanna Corbin in hopes of finding her old friend Danica Burkhardt. Danica goes by the name of Dani. Her stripper's name is Ariel. Yes, if you are wondering, yes, she goes by Ariel like in the Little Mermaid. Ed Robinette was selling drugs to these strippers that Samantha was interested in. She learns that her old friend of Dani was seeing a guy called the King.

The King is none other than Bo Ealy. If that name sounds familiar as he is related to the family that owns Ealy farms. There is a worker that died the same year Samantha’s family did. The name of that worker was Luiza Witowski. She was a polish immigrant that was believed to be killed by Stephen Rhodes. As the reader will find out he did not kill her.

The story will have twists and turns. What Samantha thinks she knows, she does not. It will end up being a surprise once the reader gets to the end of the book.

As not to revealed, nothing more will be revealed here. It does bring the reader to the climax of the story.

I will give you, my rating. I give Out of the Ashes, a 10 out of 10. It was fun but tells an immensely powerful story. It is good that it comes with an audio version, so if a person travels that is a plus, or if there are those that are auditory learners that helps as well. The book has twists and turns as was pointed out in this review. It keeps the reader guessing. Everything the reader thinks he or she knows, he or she does not know. The reader must keep reading the book to find the answers. The book will force the reader to produce theories. This book is not a simple story, and it is one of those stories that is very real, and it forces those to say, what a bunch of horrible people in this town, but there are good people still even amongst the bad. That is life. The trick is to find the good amongst the bad. It is a tricky thing to do. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is real, and it does not affect just soldiers that go to war. It can affect anyone that goes through horrible tragedies. I personally still suffer from it after I almost died in the automobile accident that I suffered on June 9, 2005, at 4:50 p.m. I learned to live with the pain, but the pain can hit me hard at times and feel like I am in a literal nightmare. In this book, Samantha lost her family on September 8, 2001, 3 days before September 11, 2001. Time can heal, but some things seem to never leave. This is true as I have experienced this personally. What events in your life have made it hard for you to live? What type of pain do you suffer from? Please leave your answer in the comment section below. Thank you.
