Hello everyone, welcome to the Matacritic. This is Matthew Hemenway. In this episode of the Mattacritic, I will be reviewing and analyzing the DCOM movie called the Swap that came out in 2016 that is currently on Disney+. I will go over several topics in this episode. The movie will deal with Jack and Ellie both believing that the other gender has it easier than the other. Each one believes that the other has certain advantages that the other does not. They are both right and wrong. I will explain in this review. I hope this episode will inspire you to read, watch, and learn. I will give you my rating at the end of this review.

Please help and be like Jessica in buying any merchandise from my website or signing up for Patreon or YouTube memberships. You will say to me that you believe in this channel, and you want it to thrive and to keep it independent. Thank you. Now on with the review
The Swap is a body swap movie. Some may ask, why are you reviewing this movie. I am reviewing this movie because body swap movies are not new. Look on Disney+ and you will find movies such as Freaky Friday where Catherine and Ellie swap bodies. Both of those characters must learn to walk in the other shoes literally. They both believe that the other has the easier life. They both learn that is not the case. This is what will happen with Jack and Ellie. This is what this movie does is have the others learn what it is like to walk in someone else’s shoes literally.
What Jack says to Ellie is that girls have it easier than guys. Ellie says, you have it easier. Jack tells Ellie, have you ever had to man up? As Ellie tells Jack, have you ever had to worry about changing your clothes for skirt day. Ellie told Jack earlier that it makes it better not to cry since you are not a girl. Jack and Ellie each claim that their lives would be easier if they had the other person’s life. It is so easy to think that each of our lives would be better if each person was another person. It is not always the case. Every person’s life is hard, and each person must learn to deal with that reality. Life is hard, and what no one ever tells you, every person has their own set of unique problems.
Once the swap happened, based on Jack and Ellie’s text, they must try to live like the other person. Jack in Ellie’s body must try to learn how to be a gymnast and learn the ins and outs of being a girl. Ellie in Jack’s body must learn how to be a guy and learn how to be a hockey player. While Ellie is in Jack’s body, she tells Gunner that she will chop the salad. Earlier in the film before the body swap, Jack tells his two older brothers who happened to be twins that he will not chop the salad. Chopping the salad means that they want to cut Jack’s hair. Ellie in Jack’s body gets Jack’s hair cut by Gunner and Striker. She later tells him while he is in her body that you now can see your manly eyebrows. Jack in Ellie’s body tells her while Ellie is in his body that she would kill him, but she cannot live without him. This will cause Aspen who has become friends with Ellie’s friend Sassy that she grew up with since kindergarten. Aspen is mean and will undercut anyone just to get what she wants.
Jack while in Ellie’s body tells Ellie in Jack’s body, is this girl Sassy worth it while he is getting Ellie’s body spa treatment. Ellie’s mother is a yoga instructor, and she believes that placing too much emphasis on inanimate objects will make a totem out of those objects if that individual gives those items too much power. Ellie has her old flip phone that her dad left her; and Jack has his mother’s old phone that his father could not rid of. They both used those phones, and it transferred their souls to the other’s bodies.
Ellie’s mother tells Jack in Ellie’s body that the old flip phone will be deactivated, and she will get a new phone that is more modern. This will prove a challenge as both Ellie and Jack need both phones to switch back. Since both phones became a totem, this will make sense they need both to switch back.
Ellie while in Jack’s body after Jack in her body told Porter not to show that video with making it look like Jack started the fight with Porter meets Porter to get a doughnut. Porter told Ellie in Jack’s body that what would that accomplish if you make the varsity hockey team. Porter tells Ellie in Jack’s body that hockey is all I am good at. Ellie in Jack’s body tells Porter that you have been trying to make the team for 4 years. Porter feels that is the case, my whole life has been a lie. Ellie in Jack’s body tells Porter that it is a cool contraption that he created with plastic silverware. Ellie in Jack’s body tells Porter that he should check this out. Porter goes to the STEM club and realizes that he is good at science. Ellie in Jack’s body finds Mackenize who she is friends with and while in Jack’s body wishes they would have hung out sooner. Porter deletes the video when he finds out his heart’s desire.
This will lead the two of them to having to live each other’s lives till they can get to the resolution of what the text wish is. They both learn that the other does not have it easy as they both thought. They both needed to help each other out and in the long run, it would make their lives better. It not only does that, but they both grow from this experience. What happens at the end of the movie? Do they help each other and fulfill their quests? Do they reverse the process, or do they end up stuck in other bodies for the rest of their lives? If you know the answers to these questions, please leave your answer in the comment section below.
As not to be revealed nothing more will be revealed here. It does bring the viewer to the climax of this movie.
I will give you, my rating. I give the Swap, a 10 out of 10. It was fun, but it helps the viewer to understand what each character must go through. Both Ellie and Jack learn while living like each other that their lives are not as easy as the other thinks they are. They both learn that they need to figure out what this quest is. They both learn that the lesson is no one’s life is easy, and the grass is not greener on the other side as those may think it is. Ellie is right that sometimes it is good to talk it out. She proved that while in Jack’s body that with Porter that you need to talk to him, and it helped Porter with what his problems were. Porter found out that he loves science and that he is an engineer. Jack while in Ellie’s body is right that Sassy is not really a good friend, and that bros have your back; this girl is trying to stab you in the back. The real friend to Ellie is Mackenzie who is in Stem club which was shown when Ellie is in Jack’s body while helping Porter find out his true passion. Mackenzie is also a gymnast as well. This story is made for kids, but it is not a simple story which makes this movie good.
