1923 Season 1 Review and Analysis on Paramount+

Blog and Video Description: In this episode of the Mattacritic, I will be reviewing and analyzing Season 1 of the 1923 series on Paramount+. It is part of the Yellowstone storyline as they mention Yellowstone in this series. It stars Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton. The series begins with Cara Dutton hunting down an attacker, and she kills him before he can get his gun loaded. She had to reload her gun with the bullets that she needed to kill him. She was enraged as she was afraid of what had happened. The scene will later show what happens to her husband Jacob Dutton, her nephew Jack Dutton, and her nephew Jack’s fiancé Elizabeth Strafford. This will happen in the 3rd or 4th episode if I remember this correctly. This series will show how bad the Indian schools were to Native Americans as well as if you marry a person of a different race, that person of a different race will be arrested. I will give you my rating at the end of the review. I hope this episode will inspire you to read, watch, and learn.

Hello everyone, welcome to the Mattacritic. This is Matthew Hemenway. In this episode of the Mattacritic, I will be reviewing and analyzing Season 1 of the 1923 series on Paramount+. Shoot in another clip As was mentioned before in this review, the series starts off with Cara Dutton being enraged at what had happened to her family. If this happened to anyone like Cara Dutton, any person would be as frustrated as she was. She is afraid and this is understandable. The series will flashback to before this event happened. Cara Dutton and Jacob Dutton live on a ranch in Montana and Jacob Dutton is a Cattle Rancher. The herd must be moved, so they can find grass to eat. If the cows do not have grass to eat, they will starve. They can live off feed, but you must buy it. It can be expensive to buy. People would look at prices and say that is not that bad. People made less money back then, and one must take into consideration that word called inflation. Prices go up usually. There are two things that go up and down, gas and the stock market. Most things go up. Food prices go up and down is one of them. Food prices usually go up not down. Jack Dutton will be dating Elizabeth Strafford and decides he wants to marry her. She will say yes and will become his fiancé. She will be frustrated with him as she wants to have her wedding at a certain point. Jack tells her that he needs to get the cattle moved, if they do not, it would be bad. If you own a cattle ranch, you must do what you must. The cows are not going to care if you have a wedding or not. Cara Dutton tells Elizabeth Strafford that the work of the ranch must come first, or you will have no income, if they do not survive. Elizabeth Strafford understands this once she talks with Cara Dutton, and she forgives Jack and understands what must be done. She and he embraced each other later. This season does an excellent job of portraying how awful the Indian Schools were. The main actress that plays the Indian girl Teonna Rainwater shows how strong she is. She is taking abuse from these Nuns and the Priest (Headmaster) Father Renaud who runs the school. As one of the Nuns named Sister Mary claims to Teonna Rainwater, she is working to get the Indian out of her. Yes, Indians are called Native Americans or Indigenous people in this day of age. Back in 1923, they were called Indians. The reason they were called Indians to start with is, back in 1492, when Christopher Columbus landed in America, he thought he landed in India, and hence that is why he called them Indians. At the time, Christopher Columbus had no idea he landed on another continent or two continents. The season will progress with Jacob Dutton telling Banner Creighton, you better stay off other people’s land. Banner Creighton will have his sheep go on Jacob Dutton’s land, and Jacob Dutton along with his nephew Jack Dutton, and others that work with him will wrestle with Banner Creighton and his men. Jack Dutton will hang Banner Creighton and the men that work with Banner. Banner is the only one to survive the hanging as the other men die. Banner will later get his gun and he will have a machine gun. He later will shoot at Jacob Dutton and a lot of people with the machine gun. This will get back to the beginning of the series where Cara Dutton will shoot one Banner Creighton’s men after this happens. Cara Dutton must nurse her husband, Jacob Dutton, Jack Dutton, and her nephew Jack Dutton’s fiancé of Elizabeth Strafford back to health. The show does an excellent job of showing what happens when a person gets shot and what must be done to nurse them back to health. Someone may ask, how can a person survive? People can survive a lot of things, if they have the will to live in the first place. That is what it will take. Part of the series takes place in Africa where Spencer Dutton is a hunter who helps people who do Safaris. He is there because he is running from his demons. Spencer Dutton is the nephew of Cara Dutton and Jacob Dutton. He served in World War I and is suffering from PTSD. This means he struggles with what is going on inside of his soul. He will meet the woman he loves on this Safari. Alexandra comes from London, England. Yes, she is British. She is engaged to a stuck-up guy who is high up there. He would be the Earl of Sussex. She does not want to marry him as she does not love him. She falls in love with Spencer Dutton, and their adventure begins. Spencer Dutton and Alexandra must survive a night when the lions and the leopards were out. Before that Spencer Dutton must get rid of two leopards at the safari camp. Th person who hired him did not tell Spencer Dutton that there were two leopards. The two men that were with Spencer Dutton got killed because of not having that information. Spencer Dutton is upset and that is understandable and wants the man that failed not to tell him that information that he needed to know. He does not kill that man, but it is understandable. Cara Dutton will write to her nephew Spencer Dutton telling him, you must come home. Whatever demons you are facing, you must get over them, and come home. You are needed here, and the ranch will be in trouble if you do not come home. She is right as it is in the crosshairs of Banner Creighton and Donald Whitfield who is played by Timothy Dalton. Timothy Dalton does an excellent job of playing Donald Whitfield. He wants all the land as he bought the Strafford Estate. Mrs. Strafford sold her estate to Donald Whitfield and moved back east after what happened to her daughter Eliazbeth Strafford. Elizabeth Strafford told her mother that she would not go back east with her mother. She wants to stay here with her fiancé of Jack Dutton. Donald Witfield wants to buy up all the ranches so that he can have his mines. He wants the minerals that are in there. The minerals he is looking for are silver. As Jacob Dutton tells his wife Cara Dutton, what does not have a recession. She says gold, but as was pointed out to me, gold is not common in Montana. You are more likely to find silver. It makes sense, silver is very valuable and would make a person very rich. What Donald Whitfield is looking for is generational wealth. Generational wealth is the closest thing to immortality that you can get. This makes sense, he wants his name on buildings as he wants to be remembered. This is what he tells Banner Creighton. If you want to hurt Jacob Dutton, take his land; this is the best way to hurt him. This will sting worse than anything else. This will be worse than death. Spencer Dutton and Alexandra ride on a boat with a man that is not well. The man who is the captain of the boat dies and Spencer Dutton and Alexandra must survive the boat tipping over. A military boat finds them, and the captain of the boat marries both Spencer Dutton and Alexandra on that boat. Spencer Dutton asked him to do that as he told him, you can marry us since we are over international waters. That is true as the captain does agree to do this. They will later run into the stiff of a man that is a stuck-up brat. He wants to pick a fight with Spencer Dutton, and he blames him for stealing Alexandra away from him. To start off, Alexandra does not love this stuck-up brat; she fell in love with Spencer Dutton who both have chemistry for each other. One does not want to be in a relationship with anyone they ultimately do not love. There are too many marriages that have that happen. People will marry for wealth or to gain position in that way. There is a scene in the series where Banner Creighton gets arrested in his bathrobe. He has two prostitutes there. When he gets arrested, they were having sex with each other when he was off on his way to jail. Later, Donald Whitfield will encounter them. He told them that this is his house, he just lets Banner Creighton live there. Donald Whitfield will tell them; he wants them to beat each other’s butts with his belt. He is looking for them to have pleasure in inflicting pain on each other. This shows how sick Donald Creighton is. To go back to the Indigenous girl which is called an Indian in this series whose name is Teonna Rainwater. She will kill the two nuns that raped her and abused her. She tells Sister Mary that you like the ruler so much, you might as will have it burned on your skin. She also tells the other nun; this is your punishment for raping me. After that she leaves the school, to get away from that prison. It was a literal hell on wheels, and no one can blame her for killing those two nuns. She will later encounter an older man who is of Indigenous nature. He tells her, you can help me by tending sheep. She tells him, I could go to Canada. He points out to her that you could, but Canda’s schools are worse than here. That is true, they were worse in Canda than in the United States. She pretends to be his son, so she has a better chance of hiding from these people. The woman who got arrested for marrying a white man, is of Chinese descent. A spy named Clive found this out and reported it to the police. The police came in there and arrested her and they called it Miscegenation and it is defined as a sexual relationship of different ethnic groups especially when one of them is white. This is what happens in this case. A book that is called White Evangelical Racism points this out. I will read what it has to say. Shoot in another clip Read from book and you want to watch the video or get the book on Amazon to know what I am reading here which I will a link in the reference section below. You want to read pages 63-64 of that book. Thank you. As not to be revealed, nothing more will be revealed here. It does bring the viewer to the climax of this season and set up another season in the 1923 series of Yellowstone lore. I will give you, my rating. I give 1923 Season 1, a 10 out of 10. It was fun but talked about issues that need to be talked about. It shows how bad the Indian schools were and how people who call themselves Christians used the disguise of religion to justify their hatred and enslavement of people of different races and ethnic groups. Timothy Dalton does an excellent job of playing Donald Whitfield. You hate this man, and you would like to see him killed. He is a vile individual, and it is very relevant that is happening right now. Banner Creighton is awful, and you hope that he will get what he deserves. Both Harrison Ford and Helen Miren do an excellent job of playing Jacob Dutton and Cara Dutton. The good thing is that the character that Harrison Ford was playing with Jacob Dutton is 78 and this pretty much matches Harrison Ford actual age. He is 81, but chances were, when it was filmed, he was in his late 70’s or early 80’s. This is good.
